Building a Scarab 670 using plywood.

This boat was designed to be built in plywood using stitch and glue construction. We sailed this boat for a number of years and had great fun racing in the Bay to Bay in Queensland. This construction is an easy and inexpensive method of building. This boat was built in 6mm Gaboon plywood and epoxy resin. The rig was a Hobie 18 which was easy to add.

The Main hull

The main hull was built in a female building frame made of plywood.

The main hull was glassed on the inside and ring frames were filleted in, on the plans they are also taped with fibreglass tape.

Plywood strips were added between the ring frames to support the deck.

The deck and the cockpit risers were added.

Cockpit seats, coaming and the rest of the were added.

The deck was glassed on the outside.

The main hull was turned over and glassed on the outside. The only tape on the outside was at the gunwhale which made the boat easy to fill before painting. The Floats

Float were set up in a female building frame(port and starboard). The supporting frames can be reversed on the longitudinal once the float is glassed inside.

The two halves are joined together and taped with fibreglass tape.

The beams were made in a female mould made using plywood. The beams were joined in the floats.
